Did Yeshua Celebrate Rosh Hashanah?
This week, followers of the Messiah – Jews and Gentiles all over the world will celebrate one of our most important festivals: Rosh Hashanah. In Hebrew this means “head of the year” and the festival marks the beginning of the Jewish calendar.
Did Yeshua celebrate Rosh Hashanah 2,000 years ago? If so, how did Yeshua celebrate this Feast?
The Meaning of Rosh Hashanah
The festival of Rosh Hashanah רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה does not appear in the Hebrew Bible, nor is it referred to as the Jewish New Year. Instead, the Torah commands the children of Israel to celebrate a “feast of trumpets” on the first day of the seventh month (Lev 23:24). In the original Hebrew, this day is called Yom Teruah יוֹם תְּרוּעָה, which means “a trumpet day”. What was the original meaning of this day?
Opinion: It is my opinion and suspicion that this as many feasts were created to maintain the people of God occupied with the things of GOD. Therefore avoiding participation on the celebrations and distractions of this World. Although, this is just a suspicion, I can see how the chosen people today – the ones who profess to follow the true Son of GOD – would be found celebrating everything that Yeshua celebrated. And not celebrating anything that was created by the World. After all, the true followers of the Messiah are just passing by. Again, this is just a suspicion.
A Call To Arms
In the days of ancient Israel, the sound of a trumpet – a ram’s horn, or shofar – signified the beginning of a battle, as seen in Joshua’s conquest of Jericho (Joshua 6:5). During the “feast of trumpets,” the sound of the ram’s horns signified the beginning of a spiritual battle. The piercing sound of the shofar pointed to the coming judgment of God. As a Jew, Yeshua celebrated the Feast of Trumpets. He was probably familiar with the sound of the shofar and, like his Jewish brethren, associated it with the End of Days.
Revealing The Authentic Meaning of Scripture
“And the Son of Man…shall send forth his angels with a trumpet blast, and they shall gather his elect from the four winds” (Mt 24:31)
Throughout Jewish history, the Feast of Trumpets has been an opportunity for the Messiah’s chosen ones to come before God and implore Him to judge the world favorably.
